Harmony Headlands

My parents came to visit and escape the valley heat. We decided to take a short hike to Harmony Headlands State Park. It's just a 5 minute drive north of Cayucos, and just south of the little town called Harmony. We had never been there before, even though it's pretty close to us.
Luckily the sun wasn't out too much and weather was fairly cool. The trail is actually pretty exposed with no real shade.
It was probably a 4-mile round trip walk and fairly flat most of the way. I think I was expecting a 1-1.5 mile walk, so I didn't think we'd be out longer than we were and didn't bring any water. Oh well!
We started out kind of late, around 10 am, so the birds and other wildlife weren't as active as we would've liked. So, on the trail, we saw lots of quail and brush rabbits. Other birds we saw from a distance were different kinds of hawks (not sure exactly which species) and other smaller birds like bushtits and a thrasher.
On the way back, Miss P was slowly starting to fade, and she did end up snoozing for a little bit! Over a mile on the trail, we came across a cool-looking pond. It probably had lots of water birds, but we were too far to tell and no binoculars on hand. Then, we came to the end of the trail which led to great panoramic views of the ocean.
At the end of the trail, we cross over a section which was probably a bridge at some point with a creek running through. We looked down and to our surprise found 3 western pond turtles and California red-legged frog! What a nice find and the perfect ending to our little day hike.
